Drug Interactions of Antihypertensives (Part 9):

Drug Interactions of Potassium sparing Diuretics:

More presentations from Naina Mohamed Pakkir Maideen

©   Potassium sparing diuretics include Epithelial sodium channel blockers (Amiloride, Triamterene) and Aldosterone antagonists (Spironolactone, Eplerenone).
©   Potassium sparing diuretics are used in combination with other diuretic drugs (Loop Diuretics, Thiazide Diuretics) to avoid hypokalemia, in the treatment of hypertension and management of congestive heart failure.
©   Potassium sparing diuretics block the Na+-K+ exchange sites in the collection tubule leading to the prevention of reabsorption of sodium (Na+) and secretion of potassium (K+) and hydrogen (H+).
©   Potassium sparing Diuretics can interact majorly with drugs such as ACE Inhibitors, Trimethoprim, Potassium supplements, Arginine and Tacrolimus.
©   Moderate interaction of Potassium sparing diuretics includes NSAIDs.
©   Monitor serum potassium levels in patients taking the combination of Potassium sparing diuretics and ACE Inhibitors (ACEIs), Trimethoprim, Potassium supplements, Arginine and Tacrolimus.
©   The patients taking both Thiazide diuretics and NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Naproxen, etc.) should be monitored for diuretic efficacy and for changes in BP, weight, urine output, potassium levels and creatinine levels.
©   The patients with hypertension should bring a list of all of the drugs they are taking including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and any supplements, herbal or otherwise, during their visit to the doctor or pharmacist.
